Artist Statement

Eric Horan Photography / Lowcountry Photo Safaris

In 1972 I visited a magazine art director. He shared: he had a single focused and continual search for fresh talent, with new ways of seeing things. This inspired my efforts in finding my own photographic approach.

In creating a new image we have so many things to consider that it can be daunting at first. But once I've identified a target or subject, I can let that direct the capture process. This involves finding a camera position, studying the ambient light, and taking note of the optimal time for a return trip, if needed and with wildlife, also knowing the behaviors, enough to anticipate their actions, to name a few.

There is no substitute for knowing your craft and equipment. Learning the tools-how aperture, shutter speed, camera body, and lens selections, composition, lighting, exposure, and camera angles all assist in refining the story and impacting the final image including the development stage: file processing and learning both the software and hardware.

With over 50 yrs. in this profession, I can say there is no finish line; the learning curve continues, and remaining open to the ongoing change is crucial to keeping my work fresh.

Today, I enjoy taking other photographers on wildlife adventures, by boat, in my favorite locations. Every moment we are out with or without a camera, is a learning experience that informs and enriches the next time we capture an image.
